Ronald Layman, Founder

In 2001, I founded The Faux School of Decorative Arts. I wanted to create a place where I could teach the next generation of craftsmen and women the skills and techniques that I had spent a lifetime honing. More than that, I wanted to create a community of like-minded individuals who shared my passion for excellence, my commitment to quality, and my love of beauty.

Over the years, I have trained countless students, from all walks of life, in the art of decorative painting. And I have watched as they have gone on to create stunning works of art that have been admired and cherished by people all over the world.

For me, teaching others the craft of decorative painting is more than just a job. It is a calling. It is a way to pass on the knowledge and skills that have been handed down from generation to generation, and to ensure that this ancient craft continues to thrive in the modern world.

And so, whether you are a seasoned painter looking to hone your skills, or a novice eager to learn the basics, I invite you to join me at my school of decorative painting. Together, we can create works of art that will inspire, delight, and endure for generations to come.

My passion for decorative plaster and faux painting has deep roots in my family’s history. It all began with my great-grandfather Joseph Wilhide, who started painting and decorating from a horse and buggy back in 1890.

My grandfather, Roger Lay, married Joseph’s daughter Hilda and learned the craft from his father-in-law. My father, Ronald Sr., was born into this tradition and continued to refine his skills under the tutelage of my grandfather.

I too was drawn to this craft from a young age, and was fortunate enough to grow up surrounded by the tools and techniques of the trade. From my earliest days, I was captivated by the magic of decorative plaster and faux painting.

Over the years, I have dedicated myself to mastering this craft and learning everything I can about the artistry of decorative plaster. Through my work, I strive to honor the traditions of my family and to continue pushing the boundaries of what is possible in this beautiful field.

My passion for decorative plaster is not just a job, it is a way of life. It is a calling that has been passed down through generations of my family, and I am committed to ensuring that this tradition continues for years to come. I am deeply honored to share my knowledge and experience with others through my classes and workshops, and look forward to continuing to inspire and educate future generations of decorative plaster artisans.
